RI 2 Blog Post

Reflection
~ In this unit I learned that when Europe colonized the First Nations they separated the children to leave their parents and go to a residential school where they where beaten if they spoke their native tongue.I also learned about the scramble for Africa, and that there was a meeting between country's to split up Africa it was called the Berlin conference.
~ I found it really interesting that when the residential schools where abolished they left legacy's such as the Indian act and they still have effects on First Nations people today.
~ I can connect what have learned in class to science because the Europeans brought new knowledge to Canada like medicine and chemical knowledge.
~ What surprised me this unit was how the Europeans treated the children in residential schools because if they spoke their own language they would get beaten with a stick.
~ One concept that I am still having difficulty with is why Europeans created residential schools.

Impacts of imperialism
This source relates the white mans burden and how the Europeans came and colonized the First nations people and the Africans. the scramble for Africa led the European countries to go and take over the African countries in order to "civilize" them and stop them from being savages. Through out the course of this imperialization process the European countries managed to colonize and then give Independence to almost every country.

Legacy of Imperialism in Canada
Imperialism has impacted Canada negatively and has left many negative legacy's. The Europeans sent First nations to residential schools to become civilized. In those residential schools the European teachers taught the First nations to become civilized by treating them like savages and beating them. First nations where subject to terrible things such as sexual and physical abuse. The teachers beat and raped the First nations in residential schools. Therefore residential schools left a negative impact on Canada.

Economic Globalization

Part A: Reflection
  • In this unit I learned that NAFTA stands for North American Free Trade Agreement, and it is and agreement between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico to practice free trade.
  • I found it really interesting that TNC’s (Transnational Corporations) can pay Workers so little money to make products that will be sold for hundreds of dollars.
  • I can connect what have learned in class to Science because in science you learn about the environment and global warming, and in social class you learn about sustainability.
  • What surprised me this unit was how harsh the working conditions and wages in sweatshops are.
  • One concept that I am still having difficulty with is the differance between the WTO (World Trade Organization) and the IMF (international monotary fund)
  • One question I still have is why TNC's cant pay their workers higher wages.
Part B: Free Trade

Free trade is the concept that countries can trade without tarrifs, taxes, ar giving subsidies. The prosess of Free trade (or Capitalism) allows countries to outsource and get there products from sweatshops in developing countries. The WTO and NAFTA are two organizations that support Free trade between developed countries.

Part C: Globalization Cartoon

This is the cartoon I chose because to me the little buisness men symbolize TNC's trading and traveling around the world to get goods and workers. Their traveling around the whole world, to get goods from sweatshops from poor countries and sell them for high prices in developed countries.

Part D: Globalization Videos

Anti-Globalization
This video is anti globalization because it talks about the protests and reasons why globalization is bad.

Pro-Globalization
This video tells the story of a TNC and The World. Its about how the Corporation went from 1 place to all over the globe. It also talks about how things are easier and technology is cheeper.

Part E: Globalization and Quality of Life

·         The connection is between income per person and life expectancy is the the poorer you are the shorter your life expectancy, and the wealthier you are the longer your gunna live.
·         Hans Rosling is pro-globalization. I know this because in the video he talks about how over the past 200 years the industrial revolution our health and wealth has increased greatly.
·         The most interesting thing I learned was that countrys can increase their life expectancy soo much when they gain independance.
